When to book a stay in Rīga for less

Rīga is cheapest in early spring. March is usually the best value, with April and January cheap too. July is the priciest, in the heart of the June to August season, when the city is full of visitors. August brings the Riga City Festival, and from late November to January the Christmas markets run, which also push rates up. The arrival day matters too: Tuesday tends to be the cheapest, Sunday the most expensive, with a gap of about a quarter between them. The best rates disappear close to the date, so for a fixed trip book about a month ahead, and earlier in the season and during the markets.

What a stay costs by property type

Rīga has a wide spread of prices, so a hostel bed in the Old Town and a family apartment with a separate bedroom are quite far apart. Where a stay is cheaper and where it costs more

The most booked district is the Centre, the strict heart with the Old Town, the opera and the Freedom Monument within a walk, a guest favourite and still affordable. Across the Daugava lies Zemgales priekšpilsēta, quieter and cheaper, with hotels offering free parking. Latgales priekšpilsēta by the station and the Central Market, and Vidzemes priekšpilsēta with its Art Nouveau townhouses, fill out the picture. Maskavas forstate is the cheapest. All of these districts sit below the city price average, and the extensive transport of trams, buses and trolleybuses reaches the Old Town in a quarter of an hour, so a base further from the centre is still convenient.

• First time in Rīga. The Centre and the Old Town are the easiest base. From here it is a walk to the House of the Blackheads, St. Peter's Church, the Riga Dome Cathedral and the Central Market.
• For families. Family rooms and apartments in the Old Town and by the parks, near the sights and the stops. The compact centre is easy to cover on foot without driving.
• For couples. Boutique hotels and apartments in the heart of the Old Town, with an evening walk along the cobbled streets. Note that some streets are a nightlife zone, so for quiet pick a courtyard-facing room.
• Business travel. Conference hotels by the centre and on the Daugava are close to the offices and have parking. Most districts are a ride away without a change.
• With breakfast. Many hotels in the centre include a buffet in the rate, which helps you set off early for sightseeing or a morning flight.
• Near the airport. Hotels around Riga International Airport suit an early flight or a layover. The centre is a quarter of an hour away by car, and the bus runs to the Old Town.
